Brazilian Live Samba & Barbecue Saturday, 29 August 2009, from 2pm – The Bull Hotel, Wrotham Village
Samba, sun and smiles
To get a real feel for Brazil and its music Saturday 29 August is a must. Brazilian Live Samba & Barbecue is a charitable event to raise funds for the Brazilian charity The Dentist for Good which will happen on 29th August at The Bull Hotel in Wrotham Village, Kent. Ticket £15 adults and £7.50 children.
The event is a unique opportunity to enjoy a traditional Brazilian barbecue with live samba, DJ, Caipirinha and Carnival decoration. A pulsating festival of Brazilian culture and fun for whole family.
Barbecue The barbecue includes specialities such as Picanhae Cupim, special Brazilian meat cuts popular for their marked flavour and texture. You can also enjoy homemade burgers, chicken, sausages and fish - all well accompanied by a selection of salads, bread and hand cut chips. The Brazilian vinaigrette made with finely chopped tomatoes, parsley, onions and vinegar will also be served.
The ticket will include a welcome Caipirinha: a refreshing cocktail made with the Brazilian spirit Cachaça (ka-sha-sa), lime, sugar and ice cubes. Plus samba lessons.
Live samba music with Capital do Samba Just as in Brazil the band Capital do Samba will play beautiful, traditional and breathtaking Samba songs. Capital do Samba is a 12-piece band to guarantee a thrilling party of Brazilian rhythm, dance and song. Based on the traditional groups to be found in the clubs and bars of Rio de Janeiro. Capital do Samba brings together all the elements of great samba; irresistibly pulsating percussion grooves, sensuous harmonies, the unmistakable sound of guitar, cavaquinho and horns evoking long, hot Rio nights, and the fabulous voice and stage presence of singer Leandra Varanda “a genuine vocal treasure” - VortexJazz.co.uk.
Samba dance lessons The crowd will end up dancing later in the afternoon! The Bull wants its guests to really get into the spirit of all things Brazilian. This is why dance lessons are on offer and there will be plenty of friendly Brazilians around to practise with all afternoon long!
Charity Action To help raise funds for the Dentist for Good, a signed photo of Pelé and George Best, personally signed by Pelé will be auctioned. This superb photo shows the greatest footballer of all time, Pelé, enjoying himself with old friend, the late great George Best. This photo is from an exclusive signing session with the King of Football in London on July 14, 2008. The photo is 24in by 20in in size and come with a certificate featuring an image of Pelé signing the photo.

A very warm welcome to the latest edition of me19. Very warm in more way than one – currently the team are suffering in our offices with no air con as the intense sunshine bleaches the grass outside. I am trying my best not to complain. We so deserve a decent summer this year and I hope that by the time you get to read this there will be a major hose pipe ban in action and my lawn will look like the African plains! Seriously it is just so good to see the sun and it is great to see children enjoying the fresh air during the holidays (but watch out for those rays on your skin ladies- see page 50). There has definitely been a historical flavour to this issue and I have thoroughly enjoyed researching the restaurants featured and Mill Yard in West Malling. It is amazing just how much history there is on our doorsteps and I am planning to include more little nuggets of information from our counties rich past as I come across them. I would be really interested in your stories and discoveries. I will have to sit down now- I can feel a feature coming on. Michelle

Everyone over the age of 60 is being offered a special deal by one of Kent’s best known garden attractions. Award-winning Groombridge Place Gardens and Enchanted Forest, near Tunbridge Wells, is introducing a special entrance ticket for seniors which will enable them to visit the gardens as many times as they like on weekdays throughout the season. The Over 60’s Club ticket will only cost £10 a year and will not only provide free entry to the formal gardens and Enchanted Forest, but will also entitle holders to reduced rates in the restaurant and shop. ‘A senior ticket to the gardens is £7.45 so for an additional £2.55 the Over 60’s Club ticket is exceptional value for money’, said Groombridge Place director Roly Rickcord. ‘The gardens are very peaceful during the week so it is a great time to visit without the weekend crowds. The formal gardens are walled and very sheltered so it’s a fabulous place to visit even when the weather isn’t too good, and there are plenty of places to sit and relax.’ Last year the gardens were voted Britain’s third favourite public garden in a worldwide poll conducted by travel website TripAdvisor, beaten only by Kew Gardens in west London and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
The sheltered walled formal gardens were designed in the 17th century and are still laid out in the same style today, forming a series of ‘rooms’ each with its own theme and planting scheme. They include the Drunken Garden, Oriental Garden, White Rose garden and Paradise Walk, all meticulously planted to provide colour and scent throughout the seasons.
The nearby Enchanted Forest can be reached by canal boat or on foot and provides hours of fun for the whole family, with giant swings, challenging aerial obstacle course, hilltop fort, Romany camp, tepee, play areas, forest walks and wacky woodland gardens. There are birds of prey flying demonstrations, canal boat rides and plenty of places to run around and play hide-and-seek.
The house and garden was used as the Bennets’ home, Longbourn, in the Pride and Prejudice film which starred Keira Knightley, and there is a museum with a collection of photos taken during filming as well as an exhibition of period costume. There is also a museum dedicated to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was a regular visitor at the beginning of the last century and set his Sherlock Holmes mystery ‘The Valley of Fear’ in the gardens.
The gardens and forest are open daily between 10am and 5.30pm until 7 November. Throughout the year there is a programme of special events, including hot air balloons and fast cars, historic vehicle shows, military re-enactments, fairy and crystal days, garden events and fireworks.

Laugh your way through the recession
Three friends are hoping people will laugh at their new venture but for all the right reasons. Kmfm breakfast DJ Andy Walker has teamed up with friends Dan Cardwell and Shaun Gray to launch a new Kent comedy night.
Mr. Cardwell, 30, from Brewer Street, Maidstone said: “It’s a proven fact that people’s inclination to live comedy increases during times of recession.”
Mr Cardwell, who has himself experienced the thrill of getting laughs after being a stand-up comedian for two years, added: “As soon as I stood on stage and got my first laughs I become quite addicted to stand-up. In fact, it’s become a bit of an obsession. But I think that’s what makes our little team ideal to put this night on - rather than chasing a quick buck, it’s a chance to bring all the acts we really love down to Kent to perform in front of a local crowd and really raise everyone’s spirits.”
The trio's comedy night, Laughter in the Rain, will take place on the first Friday of every month at the Rain Club in Eureka Park, Ashford.
The first night line-up boasts the talents of Ray Peacock, who has appeared in Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Doctor Who, rising star Tom Deacon, who since winning a coveted Chortle award has burst onto the scene, appearing on Paramount’s Edinburgh & Beyond and hosting the BBC’s 5:19, before being rounded off by Stewart Francis, an internationally acclaimed comedian who made his name in the states, before relocating to the UK. Comedy fans will recognise him from his TV appearances on such shows as Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats.
“It’s an amazing first night line-up”, said Mr Cardwell, “To be able to get all these guys on the same bill guarantees it’s going to be a top night.”
The first Laughter in the Rain is took place on May 1. Doors open at 8pm, with the comedy starting at 9. A disco will take place after until 2am.
Tickets cost £10 and are available from www.laughterintherain.co.uk 01622 687371.
